Brief History of Gambling
Gambling has always been a major source of entertainment and has been an important part of history as well. Certain evidence points to the fact that gambling can be traced back to China, in 2300 BC when it existed in its earliest forms. At that time rolling of the dice was used to decide territories.
Paper was developed in China which eventually led to the development of paper money. Sometime later these two were put together and this consequently led to the invention of playing cards. Hence, playing cards are said to originate in China. Later, cards moved to the Mediterranean countries where they were further developed and modified to look as they are today.
Gambling has always existed in one form or the other in every country. Gambling took the form of betting when the lotteries were first used in the Burgundy, a region in Western Europe, in the 15th century. But at that time, since betting wasn’t a game, it was contained to a very limited area. Cincinnati was the first place to have a casino and house cuts. The very first casino dates back to the 1830’s. During this time the refugees would set up gambling houses, also known as 10 percent houses because of the fact that ten percent cut from the games would have to go to the house.
Since then gambling has spread rapidly like fire. The market of gamblers keeps on increasing exponentially. Some people play just for fun while others are intrigued by the thrill of possibly winning a large amount of money.
Nevada was the first state to legalize gambling in 1931 and it is now the biggest gambling area in the world. After this, many states like Atlantic City, New Jersey, etc, weren’t very far behind and they too soon legalized gambling. The casinos kept on opening and now, there are thousands of casinos all over the world.
Amongst all, the most popular betting game is Poker which owes its immense popularity mainly to the western movies of the 1960s. Then along came other games like Craps and Blackjack. These games too were the basis of many popular movies and novels. You can make thousands and even millions of dollars but you can also lose just as much in seconds. But even so, these games are very popular throughout the globe.
Nowadays, just like everything else, gambling too can be done over the internet. Online gambling is now a multi-billion dollar industry, its estimated worth last year was $453 billion. People enjoy online gaming because of its ease of access to play at any place and at any time with the added comfort of being in their own homes.
